Atlanta Hawks power forward, Onyeka Okongwu, is hoping to return to action in December, a month earlier than his original return date from a shoulder injury.
Okongwu who was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft by the Hawks had undergone surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder on July 21 and had been expected to be sidelined for about six months.
The American basketball player of Nigerian descent had an impressive rookie season and was involved in the play-offs for the Atlanta franchise despite playing under the pains of the injury.
Although the injury has seen him miss out on the team’s activities since the start of the new season, he is confident of getting back in his stride when he returns.
“I feel like I had good momentum ending last year, and obviously doing surgery kind of stalled it a little bit, but the playoff experience really helped my game out a lot, my mentality a lot,” Okongwu said.
“So I think I’ll be good to go from the get-go, whenever I come back.
“I feel stronger. My legs feel stronger, I’m getting my upper-body muscles back, and everything’s going well right now.
“You could say that I’m definitely on track; my goal is still to come back in December, but I’m not going to rush or anything. I’m not going to be jumping into anything soon. I’ve just got to take my time with it. I get back when I get back.” (Punch)
