Iwobi can revive Everton midfield – Clarke

Former Arsenal star Adrian Clarke has urged Marco Silva to consider using Alex Iwobi in a three-man midfield to add protection and boost side’s threat on the break, Sports Extra reports.

There has been a lack of solidity in the middle of the pitch for Everton since the start of the season with the Toffees losing seven of their opening 13 games.

Stuttering Everton face a daunting task away to Leicester City on Sunday, with Silva poised to reshuffle his central midfield.

Clarke also suggested that Tom Davies, an industrious player that can also make vertical passes be deployed alongside Iwobi ahead of a holding midfielder.

“If Silva does opt for a midfield trio rather than a pair, he could use Iwobi in that unit,” Clarke was quoted on the Premier League’s official website.

“The Nigerian is not known for his defensive qualities but many of his best performances for Arsenal came when he was in a deeper role inside a midfield three.

“Comfortable on the half-turn, he is excellent at linking play and moving the ball between the lines with early forward passes.”

“Iwobi’s qualities are well suited to those counter-attacking tactics.

Iwobi who has featured in made 37.5 per cent forward passes since he joined the Toffees in the summer. Tom Davies leads the chart with 41.0 per cent.
