The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone C, says it has seized a truck with the number plate, PHC 121 XA for carrying over 865 bales of second hand clothes popularly known as “Okirika” and over 233 cartons of foreign furniture.
Displaying the seized contraband on Saturday at Owerri, the Customs Area Controller, Mr Kayode Olusemire, said some Nigerians were bent on business ventures that negatively affect the nation’s economy by smuggling second-hand clothes into the country.
He said, “The smuggling of second-hand clothes otherwise called okirika, which is highly patronised by Nigerians is detrimental to the economy of the country. They make the nation’s textile companies collapse as people patronise okirika more than new textile products.”
In another development, NCS FOU Zone C intercepted a container numbered MSKU 946034 carrying 233 cartons of foreign furniture.
The comptroller however said the furniture was brought in as ‘pumps’ and ‘valves’ to evade duty payment.
“The truck was arrested because of false declaration. Instead of properly declaring what is carried, the carrier falsely declared another thing, to avoid payment of duties. This action contradicts Section 160 of Customs Exercise and Management Act called CEMA,” Olusemire added.
