Three-storey building collapses in Enugu

A three-storey building under construction has collapsed on Monarch Avenue, Independent Layout in the Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

It was gathered that the building, located behind Catherine Lodge, collapsed on Wednesday night.

When Southern City News visited the site on Thursday, some residents of the area attributed the incident to the use of substandard materials for the construction and the use of quack engineers to execute the project.

A resident, Clifford Eze, told our correspondent that there was no casualty, adding that the block work had already been completed and waiting for roofing when the building suddenly caved in on Wednesday around 8.30pm.

However, the residents called on Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to initiate policies and programmes aimed at preventing the use of substandard building materials in the construction of houses, roads and bridges.

They said the government should not be blamed for every structural failure in the state, adding that residents should avoid human-induced disasters.

They advised the government to begin action immediately on illegal structures, especially those on waterways, by demolishing them to serve as deterrent to others.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident, but said that no casualty was recorded.

Amaraizu said investigation had commenced to unravel the cause of the collapse.***
