Navy uncovers illegal refining site in Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian Navy, NSS Jubilee, in the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has uncovered an illegal Automotive Gas Oil refining site in Esena, Eket Local Government Area of the state.

Southern City News gathered that the discovery was made when a team of navy personnel on patrol got information of illegal operation going on around the Qua River in Eket.

It was gathered that the personnel could not access the area immediately due to a locked gate, which allowed the hoodlums to escape into the nearby creek.

However, one tanker, three underground tanks and a long hose used in pumping, which were abandoned by the fleeing illegal oil dealers, were recovered and handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The acting Public Relations Officer, NSCDC in Uyo, Kareem Olarenwaju, in a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday, commended the Nigerian Navy for the synergy.

Olanrewaju said the Assistant Commandant, Bala Bawa, who represented the NSCDC Commandant, Adeyinka Fasiu, expressed gratitude to the navy for its prompt action and promised to commence investigation immediately.

He stated, “In line with the commandant’s directive, the NSCDC combed the vicinity for more evidence. The investigators fished out a number plate suspected to belong to the recovered tanker.

“Apart from this, they discovered an additional underground tank, bringing the number of underground tanks to four instead of the three handed over earlier.

“The men also dismantled all materials used to prevent a repeat of such illegal operation at the location and setting the stage for proper investigation.”

Olanrewaju added that an analysis of the scene would be conducted to help fish out those behind the act and warned that illegal oil dealers would henceforth face difficult times in Akwa Ibom State.

He urged member of the public to always feel free to give valuable information to the NSCDC personnel at all times.
