The Lagos State Government on Tuesday set up a five-man panel to probe the circumstances surrounding the collapse of a three-storey building in the Ita-Faaji area of Lagos Island last week.
No fewer than 20 persons, including schoolchildren, were killed with several others injured in the building collapse that happened last Wednesday.
A statement on Tuesday said the state had set up a five-man panel, comprising professionals in the built sector, to probe the immediate and remote causes of the collapse.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rotimi Ogunleye, said the panel was to determine the level of negligence on the part of the developer or owner of the building as well as the role of the state government.
He added that the panel was expected to proffer remedial measures to stem further building collapse in the state.
“The commissioner said the recommendation of the panel would be acted upon as government was determined to stem the tide of collapsed building in the state.
“He also disclosed that the panel had two weeks to submit its report to the Lagos State Government for prompt action,” the statement added.
It quoted the panel’s Chairman, Wasiu Olokunola, a retired permanent secretary, as pledging that the team would do a thorough investigation “as the members were capable and possessed wealth of experience in the built industry.”
