Transport workers assure police of peaceful atmosphere for elections

Transport unions in Lagos State have said they would work with the police to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

The unions, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, were represented by their leaders in a stakeholders’ meeting with the police on Tuesday.

Speaking during the meeting hosted by the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, the NURTW state chairman, Tajudeen Agbede, and his RTEAN counterpart, who was represented by Ashade Ganiyu, assured the police that the unions being major stakeholders in the election, would not work against the peaceful conduct of the election.

It was learnt that the transport workers were officially engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission to drive vehicles that would move electoral materials to different locations within the country.

Earlier in his speech, Edgal said the meeting was called to solicit their cooperation towards ensuring peaceful conduct of the 2019 elections since the transport workers had become critical stakeholders and partners in the conduct of any general elections in the country.

He noted that besides the numerical strength of the transport workers, they also drove vehicles for the movement of essential and non-essential items based on the memorandum of understanding they signed with INEC.
