The Lagos State House of Assembly has said there is the need for urgent action to be taken to tackle increase in drug abuse among the youth.
The Assembly asked Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to direct relevant agencies to address the problem.
The lawmakers also urged the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria to deregister pharmacies which sold banned drugs to the youth.
A statement on Tuesday said the resolution of the Assembly was sequel to a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency 1, Desmond Elliot, under matter of urgent public importance.
“Desmond and other colleagues, in the motion, observed that the youth in recent times had formed the habit of using drugs for purposes other than their prescribed use, such as for pleasure and to get high.
“The motion further noticed that the illicit use of drugs among youths now transcended the contemporary use of conventional hard drugs like cocaine, heroin, cannabis and hemp, skushii, skunk and kerosene gas,” the statement added.
Desmond and other supporters of the motion called on the governor to direct the Commissioners for Information, Health, Youth and Social Development, to embark on advocacy to curb the menace among the youth.
The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who admonished parents to give their children proper upbringing, directed the Clerk, Mr Azeez Sanni, to forward the resolution of the House to the governor for action.
