LASPOTECH sets to tackle epileptic power supply, signs MOU with IKEDC

Lagos state polytechnic (LASPOTECH) is set to tackle the problem of epileptic power supply in the institution by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) for the establishment of a mini power substation in Ikorodu campus.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Mr. Samuel Oluyinka Sogunro made this known yesterday at the school's 26th Convocation press conference.

He also disclosed that the Polytechnic which commenced it's programme with 257 students and 5 departments in 1977 is set to grad 6355 students on Thursday, March 8, 2018 across all their schools.

According to him, out of this number, 211 earned Distinction, 1,368 in upper credit, 3,505 in lower credit class while 1,271 obtained Pass classification.

He also briefed the press about the TETFund Institution-Based Research. He said "So far, eight staff have exploited this TETFund facility to carryout research in different fields in year 2017, presently, the institution is awaiting the approval of the Fund for 12 different research project from the academic staff of this great institution".

Sogunro made know the awards and laurels the institution has procured which include:
•The best centre of the Ready Set-Work (RSW) project of the Lagos state Government in year 2017.
•The 2nd runner up in the Nigeria Institution of Public Relations (NIPR) inter-collegiate debate;
•The 1st runner up for Best Linkage Institution in the year 2017 by the Chartered Institute Of Bankers ;
•The 1st runner up at the bQuiz competition organized by the Nigeria Institute of Town Planers (NITP) - (South West Chapter), to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Institution in year 2017.

The Rector said that Lagos State Government has commenced necessary steps towards the fulfilment of the promises made on some projects at the 25th Convocation ceremony of the Polytechnic. The projects according to him are; high capacity auditorium, administrative building, completion of the abandoned ultramodern sport complex and drone project.

Sogunro noted that LASPOTECH will be hosting the 7th edition of the International Conference on Infrastructure and Development in Africa (ICIDA) in collaboration with University of Johannesburg, South Africa, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana and Bells University of Technology, Ota, Nigeria.

He disclosed that the conference will hold between March 28 to March 30, 2018.

"I am greatly encouraged and proud to mention that numerous significant strides and achievements of the Polytechnic would never have been possible without the active support of the Lagos State Government under the able leadership of His Excellence, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the Governing Council members of the Polytechnic under the leadership of Prof. Tajudeen G.O Gbadamosi, the Academic Board Management, Staffs and Students of the Polytechnic.

"Let me at this juncture once again openly acknowledge the total support that the Polytechnic has been enjoying from the Special Adviser to His Excellence on Education in person of Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh. The support has been overwhelming in the last two years," he noted.

He further said "inspite of all the achievement of the institution, we also recorded a sad event on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. This incident involved the rampage of some cult boys mostly dismissed students of the polytechnic. In the course of restoring normalcy by the Polytechnic Security, one of the cultists named Ahmed Amoo lost his life at the hospital due to the gun shot on his leg. The polytechnic's Health Unit did its best to sustain the life of the late cultist, he however gave up the ghost on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, a day after the incident."

The Rector however called on parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children and wards while at home.
