The public debate, which is tagged Lagos Decides 2015, will allow Lagosians, and indeed Nigerians, the ample opportunity of interacting and interrogating governorship candidates who are jostling to run the affairs of the state in the next four years.
Speaking on the Lagos Decides 2015 public debate initiative, the Chairman of NIPR, Lagos Chapter, Mr Joseph Okonma, stated that ‘‘the idea behind the initiative is to sensitize the electorate by creating an opportunity for candidates to present their strategic plans in moving Lagos forward in 2015.
He stated further that the public debate has also received a huge boost as media organizations have shown readiness to partner with NIPR, Lagos Chapter, with the aim of making the public debate a resounding success. Okonma stated that ‘‘the public debate will be organized with our media partners: electronic, print, and social media. It has become very important for us as a public relations institution to take the initiative during an electioneering year such as 2015. We want the citizens of Lagos to cross-examine and interact with their prospective governor for the benefit of accountability.’’
Commenting on the incidence of political apathy that has enveloped the Nigerian electorates, Okonma stated that Lagos Decides 2015 event promises to be an avenue and a critical melting pot for both the general public and stakeholders to engage the various political candidates in the spirit of participatory democracy.
