Prominent among these events is the Igue Akhue Game Competiton; a game that was intensely contested for and the finals of the competition were keenly watched by a cross-section of Benin Palace Chiefs. Apart from the cash prize, the winner of the game also went home with gift packs from Grand Oak, makers of Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapp while runners up were given some consolation prizes.
While commenting on this year’s Igue festival celebration, Seaman’s Schnapps Manager, Mr Ezeani Nnamdi said that Seaman’s Schnapps has consistently sponsored the Akhue game because of the significance of the game in the history of the people of Edo culture just as the elder drink, is significant in the history of the people.
He described the company’s Schnapps as the original prayer drink and custodian of Nigerian culture, saying that the company is proud to be associated with the Igue Festival as has been the case for many years before now.
According to him, “The Igue Festival is a proud example of our rich cultural heritage and Seaman’s schnapps congratulates the Oba of Benin and all the people of Benin on yet another milestone. As the prayers and libations are offered while we usher in the new year 2015, We at Seaman’s Schnapps say let the blessings flow with your original No 1 prayer Drink , Seaman’s Schnapps and may 2015 be better than 2014”, he said.
Every year, the people of Edo State gather to retell the legend of an Oba who freed his voice to become Oba of the Edo kingdom, by playing the game of Akhue. This skilful game of spinning Akhue seeds is still played in Edo state, Nigeria today by each Oba during coronation to the Edo throne.
