Was Rohr right to drop Awoniyi from Eagles?

Taiwo Awoniyi

’TOSIN OLUWALOWO compiles fans reaction to the exclusion of in-form Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi from the Super Eagles squad for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers this month, while retired forward Odion Ighalo was recalled by coach Gernot Rohr

Awoniyi is doing well this season, but the coach knows what he wants, maybe that’s why he didn’t invite him. If the coach has to invite all the in-form Nigerian players now, I think we will have to invite more than 30 players. Ighalo is more experienced than Awoniyi and can break into our starting 11.

– Abiodun Oladapo, sales manager

I believe it has to do with the coach’s preference. Moreover, Ighalo has proved himself over the years for Nigeria. The coach picking him over Awoniyi may be because of this.

-Seun Olawoyin, civil servant

The coach is wrong not to include Awoniyi in the squad. We have a lot of gifted attacking midfielders but our strikers are few. Having Awoniyi in the team, even if it is for the camp experience, is a better choice.

-Yakubu Adeyemi, fashion enterpreneur

Dropping Awoniyi for Ighalo shows that our coach is clueless. We are in need of creative midfielders than a new striker right now. We also have other strikers who are in form like Osimhen, Paul (Onuachu) and Kelechi Iheanacho.

-Kayode Emmanuel, businessman

Everyone will say the coach is wrong, but what has Awoniyi done in a green and white shirt? Ighalo may not be the right option to replace him though, but I don’t fancy Awoniyi too. He’s great for Union Berlin, but in Africa, it’s a different style.

-Damilola Ajayi, radio presenter

It’s a bad move overlooking Awoniyi and handing a return to Ighalo, who has been out of the team for a long time.

-Sunday Omowunmi, painter

Taiwo Awoniyi does well playing under coaches that believe in his abilities. It happened in Holland, Belgium and Germany. I don’t see Ighalo as a force to reckon with in the present team. If most of our strikers are not doing well on national duty, it’s an indictment on the coach. Why are they performing in their clubs but can’t prove themselves with the Eagles?

-Emuejevoke Atumu, engineer

I don’t think bringing back Ighalo is a completely wrong decision, considering that Awoniyi still has age on his side. For the coach, I don’t support him begging a player, who has retired, when God has blessed him with plenty options in the same position. (Punch)
