It took a long time to convince my wife to marry me – Aiyenugba

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Dele Aiyenugba, who currently mans the post for NPFL side Kwara United, talks about his love for music, how he met his wife, his favourite food and more in this interview with EBENEZER BAJELA

How has married life been and how did you meet your wife?

Marriage has been great and I remember very well that I met my wife when I was with Enyimba, through a friend. She does come to watch matches with her friend and that was how we got to meet. I exchanged contacts with her and we became friends, before we eventually decided to take it to the next level of getting married.

How long did it take you to propose to her?

My wife is a very strict person because of her background. She comes from a home where her parents are very strict and it took a long time to convince her that I wanted her to be mine. She needed to see the seriousness and commitment from me before she could give me any positive response.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I like to listen to hip-hop songs, slow jazz and some Nigerian songs as well. I am a huge fan of good music because it helps to calm me down.

Who are your favourite musicians?

Here in Nigeria, I like Burna Boy, Whiz kid and Olamide. These three guys are exceptional and among the best, if not the best. While abroad, I like Chris Brown and Bruno Mars.

Do you watch movies?

Sometimes I like to watch movies just to relax; my favourite movies are usually adventurous movies.

Are you a fashionista?

I am someone who doesn’t like to go out all looking flashy. I just like to keep it simple and moderate. I like to dress looking very neat but not in the sense that people will notice me from afar.

Do you have any favourite designers?

I do and that’s Zara.

What is your favourite food?

My favourite food is rice and plantain. Though, I also like to eat a bit of pounded yam and ‘eba’ with good soup.

How do you like to relax during the offseason?

I’m sure you know that our job can be very demanding, even though people think we enjoy and just have fun. So, whenever I have the time to rest, I just stay indoors and sleep. I don’t joke with my sleep and I even advise some of my colleagues to do the same. Also, I like to read books, especially books that send positive messages and inspire people.

Are you also in love with tattoos, like a lot of other footballers?

Of course, I have tattoos on me. I have two actually, though they are not that big.

What is the inspiration behind your tattoo?

What I have on me is ‘believe’ and it sends the message that no matter the circumstance, people should not give up, that they should keep pushing hard and believe in God that everything is possible.

Which is your favourite car?

I like Lexus a lot.

What do you do before games?

I go down on my knees and pray to God before I leave my hotel or home for every game and ask for divine favour. Whenever we emerge victoriously, I like to celebrate with my teammates and family.

Do you go clubbing?

Yes, I do go clubbing but not every time. I go like maybe once in every five months or thereabout. Using our football season as a yardstick, I will say I go clubbing like twice.

How do you relate with fans?

I greet and relate with everyone equally. I don’t like to discriminate and especially I don’t like it when they relate with me using my names. They can simply relate with me using nicknames because it makes them understand that I am just as human as they are. (Punch)
