Take inventory of indigenous inventions, Buhari orders ministry


The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has directed the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology to take full inventory of all indigenous inventions and innovations.



It was gathered that the order was given to the ministry for possible Federal Government’s financial assistance to inventors and innovators in the bid to reposition the economy.



The President, who is the Chairman of the Presidential Standing Committee on Inventions and Innovation, further directed the committee to identify credible research products with potential to impact all aspects of national life.



The Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mohammed Abdullahi, disclosed this in his office on Thursday when he received a young Nigerian inventor, Usman Dalhatu, a chemical engineering student of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.



Dalhatu was at the ministry to showcase two of his new inventions, medial ventilators and a sweeping machine.



Abdullahi said he was impressed with the inventions and noted that Nigerian youths were creative, innovative and had capacity to excel like their counterparts in other parts of the world.



He assured Dalhatu of the ministry’s support and directed the agencies of the ministry to partner the ABU student to make his products globally competitive.



The minister’s directive were given to the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion, and the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi.



It was further learnt that NOTAP had assisted the inventor by patenting his sweeping machine for possible commercialisation.



On his part, Dalhatu said his inventions were environmentally friendly, cost effective, elastic and could be powered by solar energy.



He said the ventilators could also be deployed in ambulances and armored tanks.



Dalhatu noted that the products had gone through trials for one week in Gombe State.
