Players of Osun Babes and Osun United have condemned the suspension of their salaries by the state government, Saturday PUNCH reports.
The state Commissioner for Sports, Yemi Lawal, stated that the move was a directive from Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, which he added, was meant to restructure and promote sports effectively in the state.
He said, “The governor has given a directive that we should go ahead and restructure sports in the state. We have started the process; during the process we noticed that the clubs had so many ad hoc staff.
“Therefore, the governor directed that their salaries be suspended so we could set up a good structure to administer sports in the state.”
Osun Babes player, Sarah Iloduba, expressed disappointment over the move.
Iloduba told Saturday PUNCH, “I don’t really think it’s a good move because we are not working and COVID-19 has made survival tough. Nobody prepared for this. How do they expect us to cope with the suspension of salaries?”
Another player Christiana Obia added, “This will leave some players frustrated and psychologically down.”
The media officer of Osun United, Tajudeen Hamad, faulted the restructuring by the state government.
“This is not a good move. Even if there’s going to be restructuring that should not stop salaries,” Hamad told Saturday PUNCH.
“If such restructuring is being carried out in the teaching sector they don’t stop salaries, so why do they want to suspend our salaries?”
Deji Daniel a player of Osun United said the government’s decision was a breach of contract.
“We signed a one-year contract and they should make the governor understand this. We were doing well in the league before the pandemic,” Daniel said.
