Customs seize imported rice concealed in beans bags

The Kano/Jigawa Customs Command on Thursday said it had intercepted about 295 bags of foreign rice concealed in 351 bags of beans.

According to a statement made available to newsmen in Kano by the command’s spokesman, lsa Danbaba, the rice was impounded on Dawakin Tofa-Dawanu-Katsina axis of Kano.

The Customs Area Controller, Nasr Ahmed, was also quoted as saying in the statement that smugglers were still unrelenting in their nefarious activities despite the government-ordered lockdown and closure of entry points occasioned by the outbreak of COVID-19.

He said, “It is unfortunate that desperate smugglers take advantage of the situation in devising all possible methods to smuggle rice into Kano.

“This is demonstrated by the seizure made on 15th, April, 2020 by operatives of Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Command of 295 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each, concealed in 351 bags of beans.”

Managing Director, Alhamsad rice, Alhaji Abubakar Dalhatu, commended the effort of the Customs, adding, “without the Customs, the future of rice millers in the country will be bleak.”
