Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have adopted a report to amend the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Law 2019 to include the Amotekun corps.
The Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, led by lawmaker representing Kosofe Constituency 2, Tunde Braimoh, had held a public hearing on February 24, 2020, to get inputs from members of the public.
A statement said Braimoh, while presenting a report on the hearing on Monday, stated that stakeholders observed that considerations should be given to uneducated hunters and other skilled members of the community.
He added that the public also wanted the corps to cooperate with security agencies in other states of the federation and that the law should prohibit the use or employment of the corps by any person or authority for political or personal use.
“The committee, however, recommended that the title be redrafted as ‘Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and Amotekun Corps (Amendment) Law 2020’ and that the logo of the Amotekun should remain the leopard and not the cheetah.
“That recruitment into Amotekun shall be open to indigenes of the communities where they seek to serve or to residents who have spent not less than 20 years in the community and understand the native language, among others,” the statement added.
A lawmaker, Noheem Adams, was said to have observed that Section 34 (7) of the bill which stated the Amotekun corps commander’s appointment for a term of four years and subject to the confirmation of the House of Assembly, should be made five years.
The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, stated that all necessary corrections made would be taken into consideration, as the House adopted the report of the committee.
