FCTA reopens shut Abuja markets after nine days

The Federal Capital Territory Administration, on Thursday, approved the reopening of the two markets in Dutsen-Alhaji for commercial activities.

The markets were shut nine days ago when some hoodlums attacked government officials, who went to demolish illegal structures, and also burnt down an office of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the Chairman, FCT Ministerial Task Team on Traffic Management, Ikharo Attah, said the decision to reopen the markets came after a series of meetings involving the Chairman of the Bwari Area Council, market managers and the traders.

Attah said while all the stakeholders agreed that more time was needed to effectively ensure the clean-up of the markets, the FCTA decided to reopen them having seen the commitment shown by the traders.

He stated, “After our deliberation, we met with the trader union, market managers, developers as well as the Bwari Area Council, discussed and agreed that while we want to push for more time, it is apt for us to also understand from our own point as the enforcers that times are indeed very tough for Nigerians.

“We believe that we need more time to clean up the markets; but with commitment of the traders, the managers, the developers and the Bwari Area Council, we also believe that it is apt for us to look at this from the lens of humanity and empathy, while we also do what we consider as appropriate.

“On that note, with the kind approval of the FCT minister, I announce that the Dutsen-Alhaji Market, which was closed nine days ago, is hereby opened and trading activities are billed to commence from 7am tomorrow (Friday).

“We want to appeal that those who do not own shops in the market, either informal sector or lockup shops, that they do not have any business in the market.

“We also appeal to traders to work with and abide by the rules that they have all signed, and we also appeal to the managers of both the Dutsen-Alhaji and the Oloye Olajumoke markets to please not add any attachment to any shop that that is not approved by the Development Control Department of the FCTA.”

In his response, the Chairman, Oloye Olajumoke Arcade Traders Association, Abdulaziz Gumel, and the Business Manager, Eflaye International Limited, Paul Poroku, promised that the traders would comply with all the laid down rules governing the operations of the markets.
