The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday, inaugurated the recently constituted ad-hoc committee on Nigeria’s security challenges.
The committee is saddled with the onus to urgently restructure, review and reorganize the current security architecture of the country.
The inauguration of the committee followed the last week’s resolution of the Senate to set up a committee to look into the security situation in the country.
It had also urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to urgently declare a National Security Emergency to address the escalating challenges of insecurity faced by the country.
Speaking during the inauguration, Lawan advised members of the committee to do rigorous work because the country needs to take every step to protect the lives of the people.
He also urged them to revisit the report of the security Ad-Hoc committee of the last Senate.
Lawan said, “The inauguration of this committee reflects the importance the Senate attaches to the security of lives and properties in the country which is guaranteed by the constitution.
“I, therefore, call on the committee to be rigorous in their assignment in order to deepen the understanding of the nature of the security crisis, a realistic assessment of the problem and proffer workable solution.”
The Committee, which is chaired by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, is to engage the National Security Adviser, Mohammed Babagana Monguno, and heads of Security Agencies with a view to curbing the rising spate of insecurity in the country.
Members of the committee include Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe; Deputy Chief Whip, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; Chairman, Committee on Army, Ali Ndume; Chairman, Committee on Defense, Aliyu Wammako; Chairman, Committee on Airforce, Bala Ibn Na’Allah; Chairman, Committee on Navy, George Thompson Sekibo.
Others are Chairman, National Security and Intelligence, Ibrahim Gobir; Chairman, Committee on Police, Haliru Jika Dauda; as well as other members of the house including Kashim Shettima, Kabiru Gaya, Gershom Bassey, Stella Oduah, Abba Moro, Ibikunle Amosun, Yusuf A. Yusuf and Suleiman Abdu Kwari.
