Address poor funding of OSUSTECH – SSANU tells Akeredolu

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa branch, has appealed to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to release more funds for the development of the university.

Lamenting the dearth of infrastructural facilities at the institution, SSANU noted that provisions for the welfare of workers were nothing to write home about.

The Chairman of the association, Mr Dayo Temola, stated this while reacting to the renaming of the institution after a former governor of the state, Late Dr Olusegun Agagu.

Temola noted that renaming the school was not the most pressing issue at the university, but there was a need for the state government to do more for the school, in terms of infrastructural development.

He said, “We maintain that late Dr Olusegun Agagu, as governor of Ondo State,  conceptualised and established the university with a view to salvaging  the scientific and technological needs of not only Ondo State, but also Nigeria for the purpose of competing favourably with other countries around the world.

“As a result, renaming the university after Agagu has to go beyond the face value. It must be accompanied with quality teaching, ground breaking research and community services, among others.

“In actualising these goals, the Ondo State Government must of necessity improve on funding for the university, welfare of its staff and students, as well as other forms support for the institution. It is only through these steps that the change of name can be impactful and have any meaning.

“Besides, it should be noted that Agagu represented quality and high standards. Therefore, the best way to immortalise him is to appreciate what he stood for.”

The SSANU chairman added that there was a need for the government to see beyond renaming the institution.
