Pa Aduku, a soldier’s soldier, says Buhari

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday praised the late Pa Adama Aduku, the oldest surviving Nigerian soldier, who died on Tuesday at the age of 101.

He said he was a “soldier’s soldier”, according to a State House statement by Buhari’s media aide, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja.

Aduku, a veteran of World War II, fought in the Burma war, several other battles and participated in many military operations while in active service.

The Nigerian Army had announced his death on Wednesday, saying that Aduku died on Tuesday.

Incidentally, Aduku, only in 2018, participated in the Nigerian Army Day celebration in Lagos.

At the event, said to be his last public appearance, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had presented an award of excellence to him.

The Presidency’s reaction to the death of the late soldier, reads, “President Muhammadu Buhari condoles with family of Pa Adama Aduku, oldest surviving soldier of the Nigerian Army and World War II veteran, who passed on at 101, describing him as a soldier’s soldier and an epitome of honour.

“The President commiserates with friends and associates of the war veteran and Kogi State government on the loss, believing that the virtues of hard work and loyalty to the flag that he lived for would continue to be promoted.

“President Buhari commends Aduku’s strong spirit and commitment to statehood, especially for actively participating in the 2019 Nigerian Army Day celebration and other activities of the Nigerian Legion.

“The President prays the Almighty God receive the soul of the departed, and comfort his family.”

One of Aduku’s relations, Mr Nats Odaudu, wrote of him on Wednesday, “This gallant soldier could not make it into 2020.

“We lost him yesterday (Tuesday).Rest in peace, great uncle.”

The late soldier was born in 1918 in Abejukolo-Ife, in the Omaha Local Government Area of Kogi State.

He enlisted into the army in 1945.
