A group in Miango Community in the Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, has accused the representative of Jos North/Bassa in the House of Representatives, Haruna Maitala, of bias in his disbursement of N12. 5m to pupils in his constituency to settle their West African Senior School Certificate Examination fees.
A national daily on Friday quoted Maitala as saying the gesture was part of his educational empowerment initiatives to eradicate illiteracy from the constituency and ensure development through education.
He added that the beneficiaries were selected from the wards in the constituency.
However, spokesman for the Miango Youths Development Association, Mr Lawrence Zongo, claimed in a statement on Wednesday the lawmaker was biased in his selection.
Zongo said, “After careful findings, it was discovered that only 30 got (money from the lawmaker) from the Bassa LGA and shared to three chiefdoms of Pengana, Rukuba and Irigwe.
“The lawmaker was bias in his disbursement and no pupil from rural communities benefited from the scholarships.”
The group told Maitala to apologise to his constituents for his action, claiming some of the beneficiaries were not pupils.
Zongo said, “It was also unfair that stakeholders, traditional rulers and key state actors and non-state actors in the constituency were not carried along or aware of the disbursement.
“Those in authority must respect themselves and respect human rights at all levels.”
