The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Samuel Onuigbo, has called for an increase in the participation of women in the renewable energy sector.
Onuigbo, who doubles as Vice President (Africa) of Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment, said increased women participation in renewable energy would help raise the bar in addressing issues of climate change.
This, according to the lawmaker, would also help in empowering more women across the country economically.
He disclosed this in his presentation on the topic, ‘Measures to Improve Women’s Engagement in the Renewable Sector,’ at the International Renewable Energy Agency Legislators’ Forum during the 10th Assembly in Abu Dhabi.
The legislator was quoted in a statement issued in Abuja as saying, “Women are passionate and committed drivers for positive change in societies.
“And as such, they should be engaged in the renewable sector through laws, strategies and deliberate policies to combat climate change in order to achieve green economy.”
Onuigbo called for the deployment of laws, actions and innovative approaches at the local and national levels to address gender inequality, guarantee women’s empowerment, access to finance and education.
“This is more important because when a woman is trained, a nation is built,” he said.
According to the statement, IRENA fora were annual events where global discussions on the deployment of renewable energy sources were undertaken by experts and policymakers across the globe.
It said the aim was to checkmate environmental challenges caused by energy sources, while engendering sustainable development.
It further stated that other objectives of IRENA include raising awareness on the importance of intensifying global efforts to deploy renewable energy and to discuss its impact on energy transformation and sustainable development.
