Another fuel tanker falls in Onitsha

Another fuel tanker fell in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Thursday.

This came barely two weeks after two fuel tankers fell in the city, resulting in loss of lives and destruction of property.

A source said Thursday’s incident happened around 1pm on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the content of the tanker spilled on the road and forced the residents to run for safety.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Haruna Mohammed, the command said commuters had been advised to use other routes.

The PPRO’s statement read in part, “Police patrol teams have cordoned off the area and the fire service department has been contacted to be on standby in order to prevent a fire incident.”

A resident of the area, who spoke with our correspondent, said the driver went into hiding after the accident, but was sniffed out by a police dog.

The PPRO confirmed that the driver had been identified and arrested.

“The driver of the tanker has been arrested by police personnel from the Awada Division. NUPENG members are on the ground and making efforts to transfer the product into another tanker,” Mohammed stated..
