Container falls in Onitsha, Obi begs for intervention

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe  Nnaemeka Achebe, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano to save the city from more tragic incidents.

The monarch’s appeal came after  two people escaped death after a container fell off an articulated vehicle in Onitsha  on Monday.

However, the victims – the driver  of the vehicle and  a woman  –   sustained injuries.

Last week, some people died and property worth millions of naira destroyed  after  the driver of a petrol tanker lost control in the Upper Iweka area of the city, while  another  tanker carrying petrol  fell and caught fire along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, damaging  vehicles.

Spokesman for the police  in the state, Haruna Mohammed,  who confirmed Monday’s  incident, said no life was lost.

Mohammed  said  the  injured driver and woman,  who were  taken to hospital, had been  responding to treatment.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps  in  the state, Andrew Kumapayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the accident occurred  about 8.30am.

Kumapayi  said  the 20-feet container fell off a Mercedes 911 articulated vehicle and damaged a Volkswagen Golf car with  number plate  AU 813 NSH which it fell on.

Achebe lamented the incidents, calling for help.

He said, “I share the grief of all those affected and thank everyone, including President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Willie Obiano, my fellow traditional rulers, leaders in the public and private sectors, and a host of other citizens for their instant and massive expression of sympathy and solidarity.”

“In May 2015, a tanker laden with petrol lost control and exploded in the same vicinity of the latest accident, killing about 60 people.

“In February 2017, another tanker laden with petrol crashed into the Mobil Petrol Station on the DMGS Roundabout and the consequent fire destroyed homes and offices Thankfully, no life was lost.”
