A Katsina senior Magistrates’Court on Thursday remanded in prison custody, the owner of another spiritual rehabilitation centre in Katsina, Mallam Salisu Hamisu.
Before this new development, the police had uncovered an Islamic rehabilitation centre in Daura, Katsina State, where over 300 male inmates were allegedly chained and subjected to inhuman treatment.
The inmates of the centre were also allegedly sexually molested by some of their teachers.
Its owners, Mallam Bello Abdullahi, aged 78, Habibu Bello, 28 and Abba Abubakar, 16 were arrested and were facing trial on three counts bordering on conspiracy, wrongful confinement and cruelty to children in Katsina.
On Wednesday, the police sealed off the Niga Rehabilitation and Reformation Centre after it was uncovered on Tuesday.
Hamisu, 52, who is the proprietor of the centre, located at the Kofar Durbi Quarters, Katsina, will be in prison custody till October 22, 2019, when his case will come up at the court.
The police charged the suspects with “wrongful confinement and assault or criminal force in an attempt to wrongfully confine a person.’’
According to the police, the charges were under sections 257(b) and 270 of the state penal code.
The police alleged that Hamisu wrongfully confined over 81 youths and adults at the rehabilitation centre, adding that some of the inmates were chained in the legs.
The police said, “On October 14, 2019, at 7pm, DSP Nura Salihu and a team attached to the SIIB department state headquarters, Katsina, arrested and brought to this department, one Mallam Salisu Hamisu alias (Mallam Niga), 52 years old of Sabuwar Unguwar Kofar (Marusa) Durbi Quarters, Katsina that he opened a rehabilitation centre at the Sabuwar Unguwar Kofar Durbi Quarters, Katsina and continue to confine youths and adults from various states and neighbouring countries in the name of a rehabilitation centre.
“He wrongfully confined over 81 young people and adults while some of them were in leg chains, others were maltreated by detaining and insulting them.”
Hamisu pleaded not guilty.
The presiding magistrate, who pleaded not to be named for fear of persecution, adjourned the case to October 22, 2019 for mention.
