Two killed as armed youths invade Rivers community

Two persons were killed on Monday when a group of armed youths suspected to be from one of the communities in Ogoniland invaded Azubuogu in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident, which occurred around 6.30am, caused residents to run helter-skelter as the youth were said to have attacked anyone they met in the community.

Several persons were also injured by the rampaging Ogoni youths, while some temporarily left their homes to avoid being killed in the deadly onslaught.

A source close to the community, who identified himself as Onyeka, said the people of Azubuogu were taken unawares by the attackers, adding that the attack could be related to a protracted land dispute.

“We cannot particularly state the real cause of the attack, but we suspect that it could be connected with an unresolved land dispute. I heard that two persons were killed, while several others were injured,” Onyeka said.

But confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, said one person lost his life during the invasion of the community by youths from Ogoni.

He explained that the police had intervened in the matter and chased the aggressive youths into the bush to forestall a further breakdown of law and order.

Omoni explained that though normalcy had returned to Azubuogu community, the police were going about with their investigation with a view to arresting the attackers and finding the real cause of the invasion.

The state police spokesman said, “It happened in the Oyigbo Local Government Area. From the real time report I got from the Divisional Police Officer in Oyigbo, they said one person was killed.

“This happened around 6.30am on Monday when youths from Ogoni invaded the Azubuogu community and attacked some persons. One person was killed, while some persons were injured in the process.

“I think they are having a protracted land dispute and during the attack, we came and chase them (attackers) into the bush. But normalcy has been restored and investigation is ongoing.

“We suspect that the attack could be as a result of the land dispute, but the ongoing investigation will reveal the real cause of the attack that claimed one life.”
