The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of godliness and peaceful coexistence in their relationships during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and beyond.
Abubakar gave the advice in his Sallah message to Nigerians delivered in Sokoto on Sunday.
On his part in a statewide broadcast, Governor Aminu Tambuwal, urged all to imbibe the lessons in the submission to the will of Allah by Prophet Ibrahim.
Tambuwal stated that “Eid-de-kabir should be a period for renewing the spirit of compassion to fellow man and sacrifice in the service of society.”
Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State prayed for bumper harvest and sustainable peace this year.
He expressed optimism that his government would overcome the challenges he met on the ground when he assumed office.
The state government had earlier issued a restriction order on movement of vehicles across the state, from 11pm on Saturday to 10am on Sunday, as a proactive security measure.
On his part, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State called on the people of the state to be tolerant and live peacefully with one another for the development of the state.
He said, “Tolerance and living in peace with one another is our source of strength and a solution to our challenges.”
In Jigawa, the Chief Imam of Garu Mosque in Dutse Metropolis, Sheikh Musa Bala, also enjoined Muslims to fear God and shun all vices.
The cleric urged parents to ensure proper upbringing of their children, respect constituted authorities and be security conscious.
The Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr Dakuku Peterside, urged Muslim faithful to reflect on the significance of Eid el-Kabir and pray for the progress of Nigeria.
Peterside, in a message on Saturday by his media team, said the prayers of Muslims and Christians across Nigeria had had profound effect on the relative stability being enjoyed in the country.
The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 23, 2019 general election, Mr Peter Obi, on Sunday, said Nigeria should be better than it was now but required God’s revival to return to its glory.
He urged the Muslim faithful in Nigeria to use the solemn period of Eid el Kabir to pray to God to beam His searchlight on the country and revive it.
Obi acknowledged the prevailing hardship in the country, including the needless bloodletting, urging the people not to allow that to affect their spirit of love, brotherliness and peaceful co-existence which, he said, Sallah festivity was about.
Also the National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, asked the Nigerian Muslim faithful to use the solemn period of Eid-el Kabir to present Nigeria’s precarious situation to God for His prompt intervention.
Secondus said in a statement by his media adviser, Ike Abonyi, that only justice and fairness, the type only God gives, could rescue Nigeria from final damnation.
Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and the lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Senator Uba Sani, felicitated the Muslim community on the occasion of Eid-El-Kabir.
The governor, through the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, called on Muslims to reflect on the meaning of the festival of sacrifice.
The lawmaker urged the Muslim community to take the opportunity of the Sallah to renew their faith in one and indivisible Nigeria.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State urged Muslims to sustain their prayers for the peace, security and prosperity of the state and the nation. He asked them to use the occasion to extend hands of support and show love and good neighbourliness as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim and upheld by prophet Muhammad.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has enjoined Nigerians to embrace religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, which would promote peace across the country and enhance national development.
Okowa, who stated this in a Sallah message by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, in Asaba, said that Eid-el-Kabir was a season of love, peace, togetherness and sacrifice.
The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi (II), and the Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, sued for peace, unity and stability, during prayers to mark Eid-el-Kabir celebrations at the Kofar Mata Central Eid prayer ground.
Emir Sanusi urged parents to prioritise the education of their children and called on Nigerian students to live in peace, with one another, so as to foster peace, unity and development in the country.
Ganduje, shortly after the Eid prayers, also felicitated with the Muslim Umar on the occasion and charged them to love and share with the underprivileged, as exemplified by the Holy Prophet.
Also, the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, called for prayers for those in the trenches fighting Boko Haram.
The governor, in his Eid-el-Kabir message, said the festival should be dedicated to soldiers, other armed forces, the Civilian JTF, hunters and vigilantes who despite the festivities, were currently on the front lines, making sacrifices in fighting Boko Haram insurgents.
The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, urged Muslims to intensify prayers for the unity and peace of the country.
In the message by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, Ortom said there was no alternative to peace, stressing that it was only in an atmosphere devoid of violence that meaningful development could take place.
He called on all religious organisations in the country to always call on God to intervene in the affairs of the country and cause peace to prevail.
The governor described as unfortunate the situation where security operatives had also become victims of attacks.
Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Mai-Mala Buni, in his Eid-el-Kabir message sent in from Saudi Arabia, where he is presently performing the hajj, said, “We should emulate the examples set by Ibrahim and Ismail by sacrificing for the good of society and by obeying Allah’s commandments wholeheartedly.”
A former Governor of Oyo state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi on Sunday proferred solutions to the spate of insecurity in the country.
While Ladoja spoke to journalists after Eid prayer in Ibadan, the Alaafin in his EId El Kabir message, through his Chief Press Officer, Bode Durojaiye, said “what we need, as a nation, are sincere, concerted and sustained efforts towards propagating the kind of God-consciousness demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim.”
