Lagos airport driver returns lost N.8m to passenger

One of the cab drivers operating at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Wednesday said he found and returned N888,000 to a passenger.

The driver, Mr Adeniyi Olayinka, a member of Airport Car Hire Association of Nigeria also returned a passport belonging to the same passenger.

He told journalists at the airport that he found the items in an envelope left behind by the man on the back seat of his car on Monday.

He said, “At about 1.30am on Monday, I met this passenger on arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. I negotiated with him and we agreed at N6,000 to transport him to his destination in Ikorodu. I returned to the airport immediately I dropped him in his house.

“When I returned and parked my car at the airport, I discovered that an enveloped had been left behind on the back seat of my car. I picked up the envelope and opened it. What I found was his passport. I looked further into the envelope and discovered there was another white envelope inside it. I opened the second envelope and discovered that something was wrapped in it.

“When I removed the wrapper, it contained notes of the US currency in $100 denomination. I counted and they were 24 in number totalling $2, 400, which when converted at the prevailing rate of N370/$ as of Monday morning, amounted to N888,000.”

Olayinka said he reported his findings to the officer on duty at the arrival car park of the airport and was instructed to drop the parcel and its contents at the association’s secretariat.

According to him, the passenger, identified as Mr Dele Ayeni, later returned to the airport in search of the parcel, which was handed over to him.

The Chairman of ACHAN MMIA, Mr Olubi Ojo, said it was a regular occurrence for passengers to forget items, adding that such materials were usually returned to their owners because of the association’s regular orientation given to its members.
