Polio: Lagos seeks support for another children immunisation

The Lagos State Government will begin another round of immunisation of millions of children across the state today (Monday).

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Tayo Lawal, who said this in a statement on Sunday, noted that the state was worried by the continued presence of Nigeria among countries with cases of poliomyelitis.

Lawal appealed to all parents and guardians to bring their children for the polio immunisation, adding that it was safe.

“Children to be immunised would be aged 0-5 years for Oral Polio Vaccine and the children between three months to five years would be immunised for Fractional Inactivated Polio Vaccine.

“The board will start the National Immunisation Programme at the Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area secretariat, Shogotedo, on Monday,” he said in the statement.

Lawal, who expressed worry that Nigeria was the only country in Africa and one of the three in the world where the wild polio virus was endemic, said there was the need to pay “critical attention” to the disease and free the country of the wild polio virus.

He stated that Nigeria was on the verge of receiving another polio-free certificate, adding that to achieve this, all the states in the country, including Lagos State, must get rid of the wild polio virus and Circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Virus.

The permanent secretary added that Lagos State just concluded three rounds of outbreak response after is
olating type two from water samples in the Mushin, Ajeromi and Apapa areas of the state.
