Police warn secessionists against Biafran declaration

The Enugu State Police Command has warned the Biafra Zionist Federation to steer clear of the state as it will deal ruthlessly with anybody breaching the peace in the state.

The warning is coming ahead of the threat by the Biafra Zionist Federation to declare Biafra State on Wednesday, July 30.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Suleiman Balarabe gave the warning on Monday at a meeting with transport associations and stakeholders in the state on the alleged threat by the group.

Mr Benjamin Onwuka, the leader of the BZF, a pro-Biafra group, had pasted posters in public places that he would be declaring himself as the president of Biafra Republic in Enugu come July 30.

Onwuka also allegedly ordered that residents of Enugu should stay at home and celebrate the “historic declaration.”

But the commissioner, said law enforcement agencies, including the police, would not fail to arrest and prosecute any group or individual that caused breach of the peace.

“I know that the people of Enugu State are peace-loving.

“The police and other sister security agencies are assuring residents of the state of adequate security,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Collins Nebo, State Secretary of National Union of Road Transport Workers said the union members were not in support of frequent threat to their trades by pro-Biafran groups.

“We are known for peace as a union and we will continue to support the police and other law enforcement agencies to build an enduring peace in the state,’’ he said.
