12 awaiting trial inmates regain freedom in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Chief Judge, Justice Rabi Umar, has set free 12 inmates, who are awaiting trial, from prisons across the state.

Umar ordered the release of the inmates in the Misau, Katagum, Azare, Jama’are and Ningi prisons on Monday.

It was gathered that Umar gave the order while on a routine visit and on the spot review of cases of awaiting trial inmates in the five local government areas of the state as part of efforts to decongest the prisons.

She expressed displeasure that the inmates were kept in prison without trial for offences for which they were eligible for bail.

Five of the six inmates released at the Jama’are Medium Prison were charged with practising witchcraft, an offence that is difficult to prove, while the sixth was said to be mentally unstable.

The other inmates released included two each from the Misau and Azare prisons, and one each from the Katagum and Ningi prisons, who were detained for their inability to settle debts ranging from N10,000 to N25,000.

The chief judge paid the debts and ordered their immediate release.

At the Azare Prison, Umar ordered the release of two inmates on bail and directed the transfer of five others’ cases from the Upper Area Court 1 to 11 to speed up their trial.
