NDLEA nabs 412 suspects in Akwa Ibom

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Akwa Ibom said on Wednesday that it had arrested 412 suspects found with hard drugs between June 2018 and this month in the state.

The state Commander of the NDLEA, Mr Mohammed Sokoto, said this while briefing journalists on the activities of the agency to mark the 2019 International Year against Drug Abuse and Trafficking in Uyo.

He said that during the period, the command also seized a total of 322.5kg of drugs and secured 20 convictions.

Sokoto explained that out of the total number of suspects apprehended, 56 were females, while 356 were males.

He added that the command, during the period under review, rehabilitated 10 persons and integrated them back into the society.

He warned parents to monitor the type of company their children keep, adding that the number of persons involved in drug abuse had continued to rise over the years.

Sokoto said, “The effects of drug abuse are devastating as drugs have social, physical and psychological consequences on the individual user, the immediate family and the general society.

“The social effects are social unrest, political violence, disruption of election processes, dropping out of school, disobedience to parents and authorities, cultism, rape, armed robbery, burglary and theft.

“The psychological problems include injury to the brain, psychomotor disorder leading to psychosis and mental disorder, among others.”

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Command of the agency said it had arrested 105 suspected drug offenders and seized 27.35kg kilograms of various types of illicit drugs in the state in the last six months.

The NDLEA Commander in the state, Abdullahi Abdul, stated this in Yenagoa while briefing journalists as part of activities marking the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.

He said out of the 105 suspects, 89 were males, while the remaining 16 were females.

Abdullahi stated that the theme of this year’s commemoration, ‘Health for Justice, Justice for Health’, dwelt on the need to stop stigmatisation and discrimination against drug users.

He said, “A drug user should be seen as someone that has health challenges and therefore should have access to treatment and rehabilitation.

“In ensuring the achievement of the agency’s mandate, the state command has been up and doing with the prevailing constraints. In the area of counselling and rehabilitation, the command’s rehabilitation unit has successfully counselled a total of 30 clients.”
