The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has described Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi’s claim that he was not the accounting officer of the Kano Emirate Council as “a misrepresentation of facts”.
This was contained in a preliminary report of the commission’s investigation into the alleged misappropriation of over N3.4bn by the Kano Emirate Council between 2014 and 2017.
The report addressed to the Secretary to the State Government and signed by the commission’s chairman, Magaji Rimingado, was released on Thursday. The anti-corruption body alleged that the expenditure made by the council was either based on the approval or instructions of Sanusi.
The report said, ‘’It was evidently clear that the current emir is responsible for the expenditure to a total sum of N4,794,457,185,74 from the Emirate Council account domiciled in First Bank.’’
Meanwhile, a Kano High Court on Friday dismissed a suit filed by Kano Emirate Kingmakers against the newly installed emirs in the state.
The court also recognised the new four emirates created by the state government after Justice Ahmed Badamosi overruled the application filed by the lawyer for the kingmakers, Suraj Saida (SAN).
Badamosi said the new emirs were at liberty to continue going about their lawful activities.
The Judge adjourned the case till June 27, 2019 for further mentioning. The Kano Emirate Council had asked the court to restrain the state government from splitting the age-long emirate.
