The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has congratulated Muslims in the state on the successful commencement of this year’s Ramadan, urging them to avail themselves of the serenity that the season provided.
Speaking on Monday at a Ramadan Tafsir/Iftar and special prayer held at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the commencement of the Muslim fasting month, Ambode said it was important for people to imbibe the teachings of the season, especially in relating with God and fellow human beings.
“This holy month is one full of blessings for all faithful. It is a key pillar of lslam that has been practiced for 1,440 years. Every year, we are called to reflect on our lives; how we are serving the Almighty, how we are serving our fellow human beings, our nation and our state.
“I call on all our people and in particular our Muslim brethren to avail ourselves of the training and serenity that Ramadan provides. This is a time to rededicate ourselves to the good of humanity, the development and progress of our dear state, and our great country, Nigeria,” the governor said.
While thanking the Muslim community for the support extended to his administration in the last four years, Ambode said the support brought about the achievements recorded in the state.
“In a few days from now, the tenure of this administration will come to an end. This occasion, therefore, provides for me a unique opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to the entire Muslim community in the state for your support, prayers and contributions to the successes we have achieved.
Ambode urged residents to support the incoming administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take the state to greater heights.
The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr Abdul-Hakeem Abdul-Lateef, said the Muslim community in the state was grateful to Ambode for being compassionate.
Also, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on Tuesday enjoined Nigerians, particularly Muslims, to use the Ramadan period to pray that peace and love will continue to reign in Nigeria.
“The Ramadan period calls for sober reflection for all of us. It is a period that calls for us to move closer to God and we should not relent in our prayers for peace and love to reign in Nigeria,” Obasa said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Rasak.
Obasa urged Nigerians to remain security conscious by being vigilant at all time, adding, “We have to assist security agencies in combating crimes by being vigilant at all time. We should refrain from utterances and actions that can cause breach of the peace in the society. We should watch our environment by reporting any suspicious action or persons.”
