Panic as truck knocks down 12, damages eight vehicles

There was panic at the Imo State University junction in Owerri on Wednesday after a heavy duty truck lost control, rammed into about eight vehicles and knocked down 12 persons in the process.

The victims, mostly students of IMSU, were waiting to board vehicles when the accident happened, just as passers-by immediately rushed some of them to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri and Police Clinic, Amakaohia.

A good Nigerian, who evacuated the victims to the hospitals with the help of others said that at least, four persons were in a coma after the incident.

She noted that while nine victims, including two commercial drivers, were being attended to at the FMC, the three others were admitted at the Police Clinic.

According to her, two persons were rescued from one of the affected vehicles while the others were knocked into the gutter at the accident scene.

An eyewitness, Chuks Kalu, said, “This IMSU junction is now known for accidents. The government should please come and dismiss this emergency motor park.

“How can commuters be allowed to create a motor park on this busy expressway? Accidents now occur here, at least, three times a week.

“As usual, the truck lost control following brakes failure and rammed into the vehicles and the human beings here. It happened within a split second. You know that there is a hill before this junction; so, it is always easy for these heavy-duty trucks to fall here.”
