The Borno State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Bulama Abiso, on Wednesday called on the state government to pay compensation to families of workers killed by Boko Haram fighters.
He also asked Governor Kashim Shettima not to hand over the burden of the N20bn gratuities owed retirees to his successor, Prof Babagana Umara.
Speaking during the May Day rally in Maiduguri, Abiso lamented that over 800 workers were killed during the crisis, insisting that their families were living in penury as compensation had not been paid to them.
He said out of the 800 workers killed, 500 were primary schoolteachers, 200 were local government employees while the remaining 100 were health workers.
Abiso, who also called on the state government to hasten the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage to local government workers, urged the government to employ more workers as such would reduce the Boko Haram crisis.
