Mohammed vows to fix education, health sectors

New Bauchi State Governor  Bala Mohammed  has described the situation in the health sector in the state as “painfully scandalous.”

Mohammed said this  after he was sworn in as the sixth  governor of  the  state after  taking the  oath of office, alongside his deputy, Baba Tela, at 11.36am at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium  in Bauchi on Wednesday.

The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Rabi  Umar, administered the oath of office to the duo.

The ex-FCT minister said, “There are only 44 doctors in the state. That gives a ratio of about 1:160, 000, one doctor to 150, 000 patients. That is a stout mockery of the WHO ratio and leaves you with the painful feeling that our people have been left behind in the global effort to achieve the Universal Health Coverage.

“Going by the saying that a healthy mind lives in a healthy body, one can conjecture the mental, emotional and psychological balance of the people and why their quest for change before the elections assumed an urgency that bordered on desperation.

“By extension, that is why this mandate is a sacred call to duty which should never be betrayed.”

Mohammed  decried   the state  of the  education sector, lamenting  that there  were  1.3 million out-of-school children in the state.

He promised to recruit quality teachers.

The governor said, “We pledge  that we shall equitably and judiciously apply every resource and goodwill towards reviving education in Bauchi State.”
