Troops kill 39 B’Haram terrorists around Lake Chad


Troops of the Multi-National Joint Task Force have shot dead 39 Boko Haram terrorists during an extended gun battle in Cross Kauwa village in the Lake Chad region, between Borno State and Chad Republic.



Our correspondent learnt the troops, comprising land forces from Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon, were on a clearance operation when they encountered the terrorists, during which at least 20 soldiers were injured in the ensuing gunfire.



The troops, it was gathered, recovered two gun trucks, two anti-aircraft guns, nine AK-47 rifles and four rocket-propelled guns from the terrorists.



The MNJTF Chief of Military Public Information, Col Timothy Antigha, who confirmed the deaths of the terrorists in a statement on Thursday, said the injured soldiers had been evacuated for treatment at the Sector 3 Hospital.



He said, “Troops attached to Sector 2 in Chad and Sector 3 in Nigeria were on a clearance operation on Tuesday and neutralised 39 members of Boko Haram Terrorists in Cross Kauwa village in the Lake Chad region.



“During the encounter, 20 soldiers were injured and they have been evacuated for medical treatment. The Chadian Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Tahir Erda, thereafter visited the combined troops and he was briefed by the Land Component Commander of Operation Yancin Tafki, Maj. Gen Olufemi Akinjobi, at the Kinnasara Cantonment in Monguno, Borno State.



“The Chadian CDS called for more regional collaboration in ending the insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin. He also visited Sector 3 hospital where he checked on some sick soldiers and toured the scene of the fire fight.”
