LASG arrests 26 cultists, 64 others

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has arrested 26 suspected cultists.

It was gathered that the cultists belonged to Awawa group and were arrested along with 64 suspected miscreants during an overnight operation tagged, Operation Restore Sanity to Lagos, in the Agege and Oshodi areas.

The Chairman of the agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, in a statement said the operation was carried out in the Isale-oja, Funmilayo, Ile-pako, Orile, Papa-Ashafa, Dopemu and Old Oko-oba areas.

Egbeyemi, who noted that weapons and substances, including hemp, were recovered from the 64 miscreants, who included three female teenagers, added that the suspects were those attacking people, breaking vehicles’ windscreens and disturbing innocent members of the public.

He said, “Most parents have abdicated their responsibility towards their children as youths are now deeply involved in gangsterism

“Majority of the violent crimes across the state are being perpetrated by the youth who lacked parental care and joined cultism.”

While noting that the Operation Restore Sanity to Lagos would be a continuous exercise and extended to every other area known to be inhabited by miscreants, Egbeyemi said the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, had directed that those arrested should be charged to court.

Meanwhile, the agency said it had dislodged more than 1,500 illegal traders and impounded 96 motorcycles for plying restricted routes around the Igando area.
