A former member of the House of Representatives, Bamidele Faparusi, has described the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, to approach the Supreme Court to challenge Dr Kayode Fayemi’s victory as a distraction.
Faparusi said the judgments of election petitions tribunal and the Court of Appeal which validated Fayemi’s victory ought to have convinced Olusola that he lost the poll owing to people’s disagreement with the leadership style of former Governor Ayodele Fayose.
The All Progressives Congress chieftain said in Ado Ekiti on Monday that Olusola and the PDP would further sink into political oblivion if they proceeded on appeal to the Supreme Court.
He said, “Prof. Olusola is an academic with honour and integrity. I expect him to align with the reality and stop wasting his resources on litigation with no prognosis but intended to distract the government and deny Ekiti people of good governance.
“It is high time Prof Olusola and the PDP accepted the reality of defeat and joined hands with Fayemi to rebuild Ekiti. After two judicial defeats, the most honourable thing they should do is to call Fayemi and congratulate him.
“With these verdicts, it is obvious that the PDP lost the 2018 Ekiti governorship election fair and square and due to arrogance of power and gross abuse of office.
“The APC, despite being the ruling party at the centre, narrowly won with a 19,000 margin which showed that INEC and security were unbiased and fair to all sides.”
But the state Chairman of the PDP, Chief Gboyega Oguntuwase, wondered how the APC members would term approaching the Supreme Court as a judicial coup or getting to power through backdoor.
“We are for justice and we will do everything within the constitutional framework to make sure that justice is done,” he said.
The PDP boss, who said the APC members were haunted by their past knowing they got to power through illegimate means, added, “They know they are not popular. If they are popular, did they need the police they brought to attack former Governor Fayose and others during the election?
“There is no distraction about our case. A man who knows he committed illegality to get to power must be haunted. An unjust mind cannot have peace. They do not have peace and are distracted.”
