INEC budgets N217m for Abuja elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission may spend over N217m on the Federal Capital Territory elections which will hold on Saturday.

According to INEC’s 2019 election project plan, over N186m will be spent on the printing of ballot papers, result sheets and other materials while over N30m will be spent on a possible supplementary election.

The document read in part, “The FCT Area Council elections for ballot papers, result sheets, non-sensitive materials, logistics support and transportation: N186, 988, 544.00.”

Giving a breakdown of the sum, the document further read, “Procurement for non-sensitive materials such as electoral forms, posters, biros, marker pen, stamps/stamp pad- N58, 983, 953.2. Sensitive materials such as ballot paper- N31, 417, 680- chairmanship 981, 903 @N32 each; councillorship election 981, 803 @N32. Result sheets (chairmanship)- N1, 146, 600; Councillorship- N1, 146, 600. Transportation and logistics- N62, 876, 000.”

Meanwhile, 806 candidates will contest in the FCT elections on Saturday.

This implies that 105 candidates will jostle for the six chairmanship seats while 701 will contest for 62 councillorship seats.

Unlike states which are broken down into local government areas, the FCT, which is the capital of the federation, has six area councils, namely- Abuja Municipal Area Council, Gwagwalada, Bwari, Kwali, Abaji and Kuje.

The FCT has no governor but is administered by a minister who is appointed by the President.

It has 1.3 million registered voters out of which 1.02 million persons collected their Permanent Voter’s Cards.

The Peoples Democratic Party had a good showing in Abuja during the February 23 National Assembly and Presidential elections where it won the only senatorial seat and the three House of Representatives seats.
