The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Jerry Gana, has promised to ensure the devolution of power if elected President.
He said the present arrangement where federating units were relying on the Federal Government for resources was not good enough.
Gana spoke in Abuja on Saturday during a programme tagged “Presidential stakeholders summit.”
He said there must be devolution of power in order for the government to cater for the needs of the people such as education, health, and housing among others.
He said, “In a good federal system, the federating units have excellent purposes and basic functions to perform.
“In Nigeria, most of the federating units, the states, are always waiting to take resources from the Federal Government. That is not a federal structure.
“In a good federal structure, the federating units must be strong on their own. They must be raising resources on their own and paying salaries on their own.
“Every state of the Federal Republic will have resources for them to generate and create wealth. We don’t have to be waiting for the Federal Government.
“Therefore, there must be devolution of power to the federating units so that our people can be looked after in education, health, and housing among others.”
The event was held contrary to the directive of the SDP leadership.
Recall that an Abuja Federal High Court had declared Gana the authentic presidential candidate of the party in place of former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke.
The party leadership had since appealed the judgment.
