Good Samaritan rescues ex-Appeal Court president from kidnappers

The Katsina State Police Command has commended a good Samaritan, who risked his life to rescue a former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mamman Nasir, from Kidnappers.

The spokesperson for the command, SP Gambo Isah, told reporters on Tuesday that the good Samaritan, whom he did not name, took the retired judge to safety during a gun duel between the bandits and a police patrol team along the Gora-Doyi Road.

According to him, the ex-judge was on his way back to Malumfashi from Katsina, when the vehicle he was travelling in ran into a blockade mounted on the road by the bandits around 9pm.

Isah said the bandits, numbering about 30, had blocked the Gora-Doyi Road, a few kilometres from a police checkpoint on the day of the incident.

He explained that the police patrol team, in response to a distress call by some travellers, rushed to the scene and engaged the bandits, who had earlier abducted a woman, Hauwa Aminu.

Justice Nasir’s driver, whose name was given as Aminu Lawal, was, however, not as lucky, as the bandits took him along with them as they escaped into the bush.

The police spokesperson said, “When the police were alerted, they rushed to the scene and engaged the bandits in a shootout, which led to the foiled kidnapped attempt on the judge.

“On getting to the scene, the bandits had already picked up one woman, Hauwa Aminu (35) of Damsite in Malumfashi, who was subsequently rescued.

“They (bandits) had already stopped his (Nasir’s) car, opened it up and brought out his driver, one Aminu Lawal, and robbed him before they took him away during the exchange of gunfire.

“A good Samaritan, however, rescued Justice Nasir during the crossfire.

“One Abdullahi Usman of B4 GRA, Katsina, was also taken away. Efforts are on to rescue the driver and others taken away.”

Justice Nasir, who is the Galadiman Katsina and District Head of Malumfashi, could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report.
