An Azman Air Lagos-Port Harcourt bound aircraft engine, on Thursday malfunctioned mid-air, causing passengers to panic.
The situation was said to have compelled the pilot to initiate an emergency landing.
According to reports, the aircraft, a Boeing 737 with the registration number 5N-NAS ,had departed the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos to Port Harcourt International Airport with 114 passengers onboard.
Although attempts to get the airline to comment on the incident were not successful, a statement posted on its Facebook platform confirmed the incident.
The statement read in part, “On Thursday January 3, 2019, Flight ZQ2316 from Lagos to Port Harcourt experienced an unusual noise from the right engine while landing at destination. All emergency protocols were engaged and the experienced captain was able to get the situation under control. All the passengers on board were safely disembarked in good health.
“We understand the passengers were pretty shaken as it was a tense experience; but our crew was at the top level professionally and they were able to handle the situation calmly. We are saddened our customers have to experience this and we sincerely regret the inconvenience this incident may have caused.”
The airline, however, denied that the aircraft lost an engine, adding “we will like to reiterate that all reports circulating about explosion and loss of engine is untrue and should be ignored accordingly.”
The General Manager, Public Affairs, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Mr Sam Adurogboye, also confirmed the incident.
He said the NCAA would recertify the aircraft after repairs before it could return to service.
