As part of the effort to check violence during the 2019 general elections, heads of security agencies in Taraba State on Wednesday banned the use of motorbikes and weapons during campaigns.
This was part of the resolution reached at a stakeholders’ meeting with political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission, held at the Police headquarters in Jalingo.
The security agencies noted that the use of weapons posed a security threat and would be treated as a serious offence.
Briefing journalists at end of their meeting, the Commissioner of Police in Taraba, Mr David Akinremi, said the use of sticks, cutlasses, knives and firearms by supporters of political parties during campaigns was banned and political parties were bond to comply.
“Any political party involved would be dealt with decisively.
“The police and other security agencies would not tolerate lawlessness and use of political thugs,” he said.
Akinremi called on parents to monitor their wards as the police and other security agencies would not take it lightly with anybody found causing trouble before, during and after the elections.
