Ganduje releases N2bn for pension arrears

Kano State Government has released N2bn for the payment of pension arrears and gratuities of 1,313 retirees.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, while speaking at the Government House, Kano, said the money would be used to offset pensions and gratuities owed retirees between November 2015 and June 2017.

He said, “Just recently, a committee under the Permanent Secretary, Establishment Office of the Head of Civil Service, Hajiya Uwani Musa,  was constituted by this administration to complement the efforts of the Pension Fund Trustees in the payment of retirement benefit.

“To this end, the committee submitted its first report, covering November 2015 to June 2016, in which the sum of N2bn was distributed to 1,313 beneficiaries, which we are witnessing on this occasion today.”

Ganduje, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, noted that the administration had paid over N36bn to pensioners in the state.

The governor also urged the Kano State Judiciary, particularly Shari’a courts in the state “to disburse all monies to the heirs of deceased civil servants immediately after the payment.”.

Earlier, the state Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Auwal Na’iya, had noted that the achievements being recorded by the Ganduje administration were clear testimony of the governor’s commitment to promoting the civil servants and pensioners’ welfare.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the State Pension Fund Trustees, Alhaji Sani Gabasawa, thanked the state government for the support and cooperation given to the agency, pointing out that there was no single month that retirees were not paid.
