APC chief faults Aregbesola, says Rivers easiest to win

A member of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, on Monday said the state would be the easiest in the South-South to be won by his political party.

Eze, in a statement made available to journalists, said the actions of the state Governor, Nyesom Wike; and the senator representing Rivers South-East, Magnus Abe, had made the task easier for the party’s governorship candidate, Tonye Cole.

He was reacting to a comment attributed to the Chairman of the APC Reconciliation Committee for the South-South, Rauf Aregbesola, who was quoted as saying that the state would be the hardest for the APC to win in the region.

Eze said Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun State, must have been misquoted.

He said, “Aregbesola had been quoted to have said Rivers State would be the hardest for the APC to win in the region, attributing his position to the influence of Governor Wike.

“If there is any state to be easily won by the APC in the region, it will be Rivers State as Governor Wike has so far made the task of winning the state by Tonye Cole very easy.

“The governor has demonstrated lack of capacity and ideas on how to govern a modern and sophisticated state like Rivers.

“The fact remains that, not minding all the distractions by Wike and Abe, none of them can match Pastor Tonye Cole, whose international exposure and unusual feats in various fields, including administration and economics, are there to separate him from the lot.

“In short, Governor Wike and Abe are the chief campaigners for the APC for the 2019 general elections with some of their untoward acts in the state.”

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Publicity Secretary in the state, Darlington Orji, in his reaction however backed Aregbesola.

Orji said, “Aregbesola is correct in his thinking, especially as a former governor of a state and he knows what a governor can do to win the support of his people.

“In Rivers State, we believe in the prudent management of our resources and Governor Wike has demonstrated capacity in all aspects of governance. That is why Rivers people will vote for him.”

Apart from Aregbesola, Orji recalled that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, in his capacity as acting President, visited the state and addressed the governor as “Mr Projects.”

He also recalled that Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, also visited and spoke about how a committee set up to investigate projects and state governors behind the projects rated Wike as the first among his colleagues.
