Two members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The members are Babatunde Kolawole, representing Akoko South-West and South-East in Ondo State, and Mukaila Kazzim, representing Abeokuta North/Obafemi-Owode/Odeda Federal Constituency in Ogun State.
Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, read letters from the lawmakers announcing their resignations from the APC at the plenary.
While Kolawole joined the Peoples Democratic Party, Kazeem did not name his new party in his letter.
Both lawmakers, however, attributed their resignations to the unsatisfactory way the APC managed its primaries and fielded its candidates.
Kolawole said the APC had derailed from its change agenda.
He alleged that there were imposition of candidates, zoning arrangements and ‘godfatherism,’ among others, during the primaries held by the party in Ondo.
Kazzim also said he left the APC due to irreconcilable differences following the House of Representatives primary held on October 7, 2018, by the APC chapter in Ogun State.
Although Kazzim at the plenary did not announce the party he defected to, it was learnt that he had joined Allied Peoples Movement.
A member, Mr Aminu Sutlej man, from Kano, however, urged Dogara to declare their seats vacant, alleging that the defections were not in accordance with the provisions of Section 68(1) of the Constitution.
Dogara, however, ruled Suleiman out of order.
Gale of defections had hit both chambers of the National Assembly since July 2018, with President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and Dogara defecting from the APC to the PDP.
Former Majority Leader of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, had also dumped the PDP for the APC.
Several other lawmakers had also dumped the APC for the African Democratic Congress, People’s Redemption Party, among others.
