NBC warns against hate speech

The Chairman, Board of National Broadcasting Commission, Mallam Ikra Bilbis, has advised politicians to guide against hate speech and any form of behaviour that may have negative effects on the outcome of the 2019 General Elections.

He gave the advice during a two-day workshop in Sokoto for heads of broadcast media, producers of political programmes and heads of news in the North.

The workshop, with the theme, ‘Media Coverage of 2015 elections: Challenges, regulatory framework and the way forward for a more democratic society,’ featured different paper presentations.

Professor Jubril Ibrahim, in his paper titled, ‘Presentation of tapestry hate speech research,’ urged the NBC to review their laws to guide against hate speech.

The professor also advised media houses against the spreading of hate speech, saying, “It could destroy the election as well as the country if not well checked.”

Professor Umar Pate, who delivered the paper, ‘2015 General Elections; Divisive rhetoric and use of the broadcast media,’ advised media houses to be mindful of hate speeches.
